The key in Rembrandt lighting is creating a triangle of light underneath the eye. One side of the face is lit well from the main light source while the other side of the face uses the interaction of shadows and light, also known as chiaroscuro, to create this geometric form on the face.
Example:
This example of Rembrandt lighting is quite a soft example. The shadow line on his face is quite soft and not harsh like some Rembrandt styles. The triangle under the boys eye is the key that shows the style of lighting used.
